The Fred Daly Trophy
This Friday - April 1st - we play host to the Leinster Branch by staging for them a regional qualifying event for The Fred Daly Trophy.
Fred Daly, for you younger readers was one of Ireland's greatest golfers. He was born in 1911 in Portrush and he was a great friend of The Brad - Harry Bradshaw. He died in 1990, shorthly before Harry and while Fred was the only Irishman to win The British Open in Hoylake in 1947, The Brad came close in Sandwich in 1948 where he lost to the great Bobby Locke. The historians of the game will know this was the Open where Harry's ball came to rest in a broken milk bottle.
The Fred Daly Trophy is confined to Boys under the age of 18 and 21 teams of 5 players will compete at our club on Friday from 8.30am to 1.15pm. Noel Foley is Team Manager of the Athy team and when I spoke to him at the club last night, he had not yet finalised his team - he is sadly missing some of our lower handicapped juniors (a pity when one considers this is a Gross event and we have home advantage).
Teams from Cill Dara, Abbeyleix, Woodenbridge, Curragh, Wexford, Castlecomer, Heath, Baltinglass, Carlow, Waterford, Kilkenny,Callan, Craddockstown, Portarlington, Blainroe, Mountainview, Rosslare, Birr, Vartry Lakes and New Ross will compete against our team.
We wish them all well on their trip to Athy and we hope they all enjoy their game.
Perhaps you might have an hour or two to spare on Friday and you might like to call to the club to cheer on our lads and when you are at it, please call to Jonathan and enjoy the splendid food at the restaurant.
Regards
Ger Ennis
